Families Fighting for Justice are pleased to share a positive update following a day in Westminster on 28th April, where Jean Taylor continued to represent victims’ families and campaign for meaningful change.
Progress around Chantel’s Law is looking encouraging. It is important to clarify that this proposed law will not be attached to charges of murder, which already carry their own sentences.
Instead, Chantel’s Law will focus specifically on the crimes of dismemberment and concealment of a victim’s body. Where these offences are committed following a murder, they would carry a separate, combined sentence, formally recognised as Chantel’s Law.
This would ensure that these additional actions are addressed more clearly and consistently within the justice system, rather than being left solely to judicial discretion as aggravating factors.
It is expected that Chantel’s Law will take time to be fully implemented, with an estimated timeframe of next year, as it progresses through the necessary legal channels and processes.
The discussions were attended by the Under Secretary of State, the Commissioner for Law Commissions, Ministers, and MPs — all of whom showed agreement and support towards this important step forward.
One amazing, positive day. 🙏👍
Families Fighting for Justice will continue to stand alongside victims’ families, pushing for justice, accountability, and lasting change.
